The “Hakodate Winter Festival” is one of the main events that colors the winter season in Hakodate each year. During the festival, the entire city—especially the Motomachi area lined with historic buildings—sparkles with brilliant lights in the “Hakodate Illumination.” Various events are held, including the “Winter Fireworks,” which light up the clear night sky. The warm glow envelops the city, allowing visitors to fully experience the charm of Hakodate’s winter.
- Hakodate Illumination
Around 160,000 bulbs illuminate the trees along Hachimanzaka and Kaiko Street, wrapping the city in dazzling light. Visitors can enjoy the enchanting winter scenery that can only be seen in Hakodate. One of the most popular views is from the top of Hachimanzaka, overlooking the port with the illuminated Mashu Maru ship in front—a breathtaking picture of light and beauty. The sidewalk on Hachimanzaka is equipped with a heating system, making it safe and comfortable even on snowy days.
- Hakodate Station & Daimon Illumination
Starting from the illuminated tunnel at JR Hakodate Station Square, the Daimon area (from Hakodate Station Intersection to Matsukaze Town Intersection) is decorated with fantastical lighting displays. Street lamps and building facades glow warmly, gently welcoming visitors to the city.
- Hakodate Winter Fireworks
The “Hakodate Winter Fireworks,” which light up the winter night sky, will be held every Friday and Saturday in February 2026 (6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27, 28) from 6:00 p.m. on Midori-no-Shima Island, lasting about 10 minutes each night.
