Located at the southern end of Hokkaido, the lively city of Hakodate is celebrated for its stunning vistas, rich history, and, most notably, its culinary delights. A highlight event that truly captures the essence of the city’s food scene is the BAR-GAI festival. Previous Spring BAR-GAI (April 21, 2024) 61 participating restaurants, based on the author’s first-hand experience, will provide gourmets with an experience not to be missed, where they can enjoy local flavors in a cozy atmosphere.

What is BAR-GAI?

The “Hakodate Western District BAR-GAI” is held twice a year, in spring and autumn. With a set of five tickets and a map in hand, participants can enjoy a stroll around the town of Hakodate while eating and drinking delicious “pintxos” (light snacks) and alcohol.

What is BAR?

A Spanish bar is a coffee shop, a standing tavern, a dining room, or a social gathering place. They are open from early in the morning until late at night and are an essential part of the Spanish way of life.

What is a Pincho (singular form of pinchos)?

Pinchos are the bite-sized snacks served in Spanish bars. Pincho means toothpick in Spanish.

BAR-GAI History in Hakodate

In 2004, an international conference called “2004 Spanish Cuisine Forum in HAKODATE” was held in Hakodate, and this was the impetus for Koji Fukaya, the owner of Restaurant Basque, the only Basque cuisine restaurant in Hakodate.

He started Restaurant Basque with the idea of recreating the bustling atmosphere of a Spanish bar in Hakodate by asking fellow restaurateurs to join him.

Chef Fukaya thought it would be a good idea to recreate the fun of walking through the rows of bars that are an essential part of Spanish dining, especially in the Basque region.

Since then, the event has gained a reputation as a place to enjoy delicious food and drinks while enjoying the Western-style streetscape, attracting customers from all over the country. The event has continued for 20 years in Hakodate.
