Hakodate in Autumn (September - November)
The autumn scenery in Hakodate will inspire you to take many photos. The vibrant red and yellow hues of fall foliage can be spotted as early as mid-October. The best places to visit around this time of the year are Kosetsuen Garden and Onuma Quasi National Park.
Weather and Clothing
Day temperatures in September are often above 20 degrees Celsius, but it gets cold at night so please make sure to wear a jacket or a shawl over long-sleeved clothes. From October, jackets become indispensable as evening temperatures often fall under 10 degrees Celsius. In November, you’ll need gloves, a hat, and a scarf to keep warm; the night temperatures hover just a little over 0 degrees Celsius.
The Hakodate Night View in Autumn
The weather tends to be stable and the air is clear in the autumn months, so it’s a great time to enjoy the night view from the Mt. Hakodate Observatory. The city lights might even look more brilliant than in other seasons! Please be careful and wear thick clothing because temperatures are very low on the mountain summit after sunset; it’s actually just as cold as in winter!
