Hachimanzaka Slope is a popular photo spot, and visitors from both Japan and overseas can sometimes be seen standing in the middle of the road to take commemorative photos. However, the road is not closed to traffic, and taking photos in the roadway can obstruct vehicles and poses a serious risk of injury. Please do not enter the roadway when taking photos.

There have also been instances of visitors entering private property on either side of the slope or the grounds of Hakodate Nishi High School without permission, as well as littering. In response, the City of Hakodate installed multilingual information panels near the sidewalks on both sides of the slope in April 2025. The panels are written in Japanese, English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, and Korean, and ask visitors not to obstruct vehicle traffic, enter private property without permission, or litter.

Please keep safety and local etiquette in mind when taking photos, when you want to capture a beautiful background. Be mindful of your surroundings and considerate of the local community. We hope you enjoy taking photos and sightseeing while respecting local etiquette and staying safe.
