Early summer in Hakodate marks the start of the city’s vibrant event season, accompanied by refreshing coastal breezes. To help you make the most of Hakodate’s short but beautiful summer, here are three featured events taking place in July.

 

Hakodate Open-air Theater

An outdoor historical performance staged at the Special Historic Site of Goryokaku. Local citizens bring Hakodate’s dramatic history to life through dynamic performances depicting the Ainu era, Kitamaebune trading ships, the opening of the port, the Battle of Hakodate, the Great Fire, and more.

  • Dates: July 5, 12, 19, and 26
  • Time: 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM (Venue opens at 4:00 PM)

    1) Advance Tickets: ¥1,000 (¥500 for high school students and younger)

The Hakodate Shimbun Hakodate Port Fireworks Display

One of Hakodate’s three major fireworks festivals. Enjoy spectacular fireworks illuminating across a wide waterfront area stretching from Toyokawa Wharf to the pier in front of the Seikan Ferry Memorial Ship Mashū-maru.

  • Date: July 19, 2026 (Postponed to July 20 in case of severe weather)
