Hakodate Airport Has Become More Enjoyable, A Complete Guide to Information Desks and Shops

Hakodate Airport, the gateway to the skies of Hakodate. It is known for its convenient access, with the city center located unusually close compared to other domestic airports. After being jointly privatized in January 2020 along with six other airports in Hokkaido, the information desk and directly managed shops inside the domestic terminal building underwent major renovations in March 2022. On August 5, 2025, a food court opened on the third floor, making the airport even more appealing.

From the moment you arrive until just before your flight, Hakodate Airport has evolved into a place full of excitement, where you can enjoy unique Hakodate experiences. Let us take you on a tour around the passenger terminal building.

Access to Hakodate Airport

Since there is no railway service to Hakodate Airport, the main transportation options are rental cars, taxis, and the most convenient option is buses. When traveling to Hakodate Station, Hakodate Morning Market, Goryokaku, Onuma, or Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station, you can board a bus directly from Stops 1 to 3 located near the exit by the “Hakodate Airport Domestic Terminal” arrival lobby.

Overview of the Hakodate Airport Terminal Building

Hakodate Airport consists of two buildings: the domestic terminal and the international terminal. The domestic terminal has three floors, while the international terminal has two floors.

Domestic Terminal

Hakodate’s domestic routes connect to Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo (New Chitose and Okadama), and Okushiri. The main facilities are located in the domestic terminal and include a general information desk, luggage delivery service, restaurants, souvenir shops, and a convenience store.

International Terminal

Hakodate’s international flights operate to Taiwan (Starlux Airlines, Tigerair Taiwan) and South Korea (Jeju Air).

  • Tuesday, Saturday: 15:00 ~ 18:30

First Thing Upon Arrival : Gather Information

Domestic Terminal 1st Floor・LOCAL INFORMATION Gattsuri Dounan~A Comprehensive New-Style Tourist Information Center for Southern Hokkaido

Located right in front of the arrival lobby, “Gattsuri Donan” is a tourist information center where you can get local information about Hakodate Airport and the Southern Hokkaido region. Staff are available to assist with a wide range of inquiries.

In fixtures divided by area, “Donan Bito Cards” (Business cards) are displayed, where people active in Hakodate and the Southern Hokkaido region, as well as information center staff, introduce their recommended spots and ways to enjoy their favorite places. In addition, various shop cards and tourism brochures are available for visitors to take freely.

In one corner of the information center, there is a large table made from locally sourced wood (Southern Hokkaido cedar) that can be freely used for resting, eating, or working on a laptop. The color of the wood was chosen by collecting suggestions from local residents for what they consider “Hakodate colours” and is used throughout the interior design.

Restaurants to Visit After Arrival or Before Departure

Domestic Terminal 3rd Floor・HAKODATE GOURMET PORT

Located on the 3rd floor of the domestic terminal, HAKODATE GOURMET PORT features a warm, brick-style design that reflects Hakodate’s port-town charm, creating a space with an exotic atmosphere. The number of seats has increased by about 1.5 times compared to the previous restaurant, and from seats overlooking the runway, you can watch aircraft take off and land, and on clear days, even see the Shimokita Peninsula.

The food court brings together five popular restaurants from Hakodate and the Southern Hokkaido region. 

Matsukasa(Ramen shop)

Matsukasa, a famous ramen shop from Nanae Town, Hokkaido, is popular with both locals and tourists. Their signature rich miso ramen features a special sauce blending three types of miso with a double broth of pork bones and chicken, creating a deep flavor that is rich but not too heavy. The chewy medium-thick curly noodles and toppings enhance the taste, making it a perfect ramen bowl to remember from your trip.

This seafood restaurant is operated by Konishi Fish Shop, a fresh fish wholesaler in Hakodate, Hokkaido. It offers a variety of dishes made with carefully selected local ingredients, including luxurious seafood bowls packed with fresh catches. Visitors can enjoy authentic flavors from Hakodate and Southern Hokkaido conveniently within the airport.

Fresh seafood caught daily at Hakodate Fish Market and from nearby coastal areas is carefully prepared by skilled chefs at the restaurant. They serve set meals featuring local fish that highlight the natural flavors of the ingredients, as well as “Kegani Meshi” (Horsehair Crab Rice), a dish made with Hokkaido snow crab, prepared with a focus on taste and quality. Guests can enjoy constantly fresh, seasonal flavors throughout the year.

Hikomabuta KITCHEN(Meat Dishes)

This restaurant, run directly by a pig farm in Mori Town, Southern Hokkaido, specializes in pork dishes. It uses the farm’s own brand, “Hikoma Pork,” known for its sweet fat and juicy, tender meat. Visitors can enjoy popular Southern Hokkaido dishes such as ginger pork set meals and pork rice bowls, showcasing the rich flavor of the pork in a casual dining setting.

méli mélo(Curry Restaurant)

This curry restaurant is the first in Southern Hokkaido, produced by Michelin-starred chef Daisuke Sato from Hakodate, who built his reputation with the starred French restaurant “méli mélo” in Sapporo. It offers both soup curry and roux curry.
The recommended “Seafood Dashi Soup Curry” combines a double broth of seafood and chicken with a special spice blend, crafted delicately using French techniques to create a unique flavor. Enjoy a delicious meal before or after your flight in this food court packed with the essence of Hakodate.

Domestic Terminal 1st Floor・Ramen and Soba Noodles Onjiki Niwamoto~Where The Original Hakodate Salt Ramen is popular

This ramen shop is popular for its “Original Hakodate Salt Ramen,” made with a clear, light-flavored broth and homemade noodles. When it opened at Hakodate Airport in 1971, the salt ramen was labeled as “Hakodate Ramen” so that tourists would remember it, which is why it proudly carries the title “Original.” The menu also features Hokkaido-inspired dishes such as “Kaikyo Ramen” topped with shrimp and scallops, and “Trappist Ramen” with butter and corn.

Founded in 1932 in Hakodate, this is the oldest coffee shop in Hokkaido. It offers traditional “Blend Coffee” and light meals. The coffee-flavored soft serve, made with their own roasted beans, is also popular for its slightly bitter taste and rich aroma. Soft serve and drinks are available for takeout.

At this standing-style sushi shop, operated by a seafood wholesaler with a store in front of Hakodate Station, you can casually enjoy sushi made with fresh ingredients. In addition to sushi, they also offer rice bowls and a selection of alcohol and other beverages.

Domestic Terminal 2nd Floor, Departures Waiting Area・FLIGHT FRY~A Treat to Enjoy Before Departure

This restaurant is located in the departures waiting area on the 2nd floor of the domestic terminal, after passing through security. Here you can purchase a variety of dishes full of Hokkaido and Hakodate flavor that can be enjoyed even in the short time before boarding, as well as items recommended for taking on board.

※Available only for passengers flying on domestic flights departing from Hakodate Airport.

The menu includes original craft burgers featuring Hokkaido specialties, such as the “Ezo Deer Gibier Burger” made with a patty of Hokkaido Ezo venison and pork, along with Hokkaido favourites like fried chicken (zangi) and Genghiskhan. The shop’s signature “NORI BENTO” is an airport-exclusive boxed meal featuring the rich aroma of rock seaweed paired with butter and Gagome kombu soy sauce. Its size is perfect for enjoying in the cabin.

The famous croquettes from Asari Meat Shop, a long-established butcher beloved by Hakodate locals, are also available in limited quantities from 11 a.m. (not available on Wednesdays). Pair your meal with the “Hokkaido Selected Beer Tasting Set,” which includes two craft beers from Otobe Oiwake Brewing in Otobe Town and Sapporo Classic.

Shops to Visit When Buying Souvenirs

Domestic Terminal 2nd Floor・THE HAKODATE DEPART~Directly Managed Shops

Run directly by the Hakodate Airport operating company, this shop offers well-known Hokkaido souvenirs like “Rokkatei” and “Shiroi Koibito,” as well as selected items from Hakodate and Southern Hokkaido. From sweets and rice toppings to local alcohol, snacks, and regionally made retort curries, the store features a broad range of locally inspired products. The displays are arranged by category in a layout reminiscent of a department-store food hall, allowing for easy browsing.
The “Hako to Tate” corner showcases Hakodate-style goods, including airport-original wooden animal carvings and Goryokaku-shaped trivets available in seasonal designs.

A special section called “Donan Osekkai Yokocho,” which brings together souvenirs from Hakodate and Southern Hokkaido, opened in June 2022. It features a wide variety of products proudly recommended in the warm, friendly Hakodate style, including local alcohol, seafood delicacies, sweets, and more.

This is the studio and shop of Sho Onishi, a painter based in Hakodate. He creates watercolor paintings on site, featuring the beautiful landscapes of Hakodate and Hokkaido. The shop displays and sells framed original works, postcards reproduced from the originals, and bookmarks, making them perfect as a memento of the scenery you saw during your trip.

International Terminal 2nd Floor DUTY FREE SHOP

The Duty Free Shop is located in the international departures waiting area, after passing through security. The shop is small but offers cosmetics, perfumes, alcohol, tobacco, and a variety of duty-free souvenirs.

It is located on the right side as you exit the domestic arrivals lobby. Certain destinations, such as Motomachi Area at the foot of Mount Hakodate, have few convenience stores, so make sure to pick up anything you need before leaving the airport.

This paid lounge offers free soft drinks, Wi-Fi, and access to magazines and newspapers. It’s a great place to relax before departure or after arrival. The fee is 1,050 yen per person (free for children under 3). Guests flying the same day who hold eligible card memberships can use the lounge for free. Private rooms are also available for a focus work. (4,400 yen per hour)

From the observation deck, you can watch planes take off and land against the spectacular backdrop of the Tsugaru Strait and Mount Hakodate. It is a great spot for seeing off or welcoming travelers, enjoying some time before your flight, or simply relaxing.
